Ways to Divide Groups into a Team

Posted on 7th March 2018 by Rebecca Page

We often find ourselves needing to sort pupils into small groups for an activity. Dividing students into groups can often be a difficult task, and you may want a mix of abilities, and also to mix up friendship groups.

Here are 4 alternative ways to divide your class into smaller groups:

Favourite Colour

Group children by the colour of their top they are wearing, or if all children are wearing the School uniform/PE kit, group them by their favourite colour

  • Favourite Colour
  • Colour of Trainers
  • Colour of Top

Favourite Fruit:

Think of as many fruits as you need groups and name each corner of the room one of the fruits. Get the children to decide their favourite fruit and go to that corner

  • Apple
  • Banana
  • Grape
  • Strawberry

The Name Game

Group children by the first letter of their middle name, or by the last letter of their first name

  • Name End in E
  • First Name
  • Last Name

Arm Cross

A more unique way to group children is by asking them to fold/cross their arms. The people with their left arms on top form one group, and those with their right arms on top form the other group.

  • Right arm on top
  • Right arm on left

By grouping children together that you wouldn’t normally, you can discover pupils that work well together, which can help for their learning in the future.
