How to Assess a PE Lesson in 1 minute!

Posted on 1st June 2017 by Jimmy Haarhoff

Staff monitoring is vital for education of children to be successful and involves continuous improvements.

However, staff observing can sometimes fall below other elements that take priority, such as planning lessons and meeting other deadlines.

But monitoring doesn't always have to be a lengthy and time consuming process, it can actually be summed up using some simple yet effective bullet points. These bullet points will allow you to asses and evaluate your PE lessons in an effective way that will be beneficial to yourself, the teaching staff, and most importantly the children's education. These can be split into four sections, which make it an even simpler task!

It is worth adding that certain factors should be present in every lesson. These include: Classroom Behaviour and Management, Challenge, Praise and Reward, knowledge of activity being taught, and awareness of health and safety within the environment.

Follow the plan below to identify the elemnts that outstanding lessons will have:

Pre-Lesson

  • Evidence of well planned and appropriate work with planning of activities
  • Resorces that stimulate and enhance learning

Starter

  • Control of entrance and clear expectations met, including explained Learning Objectives
  • Starter or warm up activity to increase engagement

Main Lesson

  • Tasks that flow with the learning objectives with questions to stretch and challenge
  • All pupils on task and engaged
  • Variety of working techniques, such as individually and group work

Plenary

  • Summarise learning and ensure it meets learning objectives
  • Pupils have made positive and excellent progress

After assessing each element, the teacher should be meeting (and even exceeding) each element, and if they are not then it may be worth asking why? This may lead to a formal lesson observation, where the lesson can be observed in more detail. This will allow changes to be identified and implented, and will result in a positive outcome for all involved.
