Budgeting Sports Premium

Posted on 8th March 2017 by Rebecca Page

What is PE and Sport Premium?

The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in March 2013 to improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. The £150 million per year funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport.

All schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils between the ages of 5-11 on roll will receive a lump sum of £8,000 plus an additional premium of £5 per pupil. The dedicated primary PE and Sport Premium goes directly to primary school head teachers so that they can decide how best to use it to provide sporting activities for pupils.

Purpose of funding:

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

The aim is to achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.
They would expect indicators of such improvement to include:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
  • The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

Examples on what to spend your sports premium on include:

  • up-skill teachers to improve the quality of sport lessons
  • invest in quality coaching
  • provide more opportunities for pupils to take part in inter-school competitions
  • offer more after-school clubs
  • purchase better equipment
  • introduce new and unusual sports like fencing, climbing, ultimate Frisbee and Danish long-ball to encourage more children to enjoy sport
  • improve sport teaching for children with special educational needs
  • deliver holiday activities
  • introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take part

  • run sport competitions
  • run sports activities in partnership with other schools

Make your budget work

Look at how much you’ve actually got to spend and what you can achieve with it.

Now you know where your funding is coming from, create a budgeting calendar and plan ahead for all scenarios. In most cases, you’ll have to set a budget from April-March in line with your local authority’s (LA) financial year, rather than based on the academic year.

It’s good practice to monitor and review your budget monthly.

Between January and March, you’ll want to start forecasting next year’s budget, while reviewing the current budget to identify areas where money could be moved to other resources in future.
